When industrial unrest broke out in the textile mills of Coimbatore in 1948

Immediately after Independence, a major crisis gripped the textile sector in the city. Retrenchment notices were served on about 11,000 workers on a single day. The workers started a strike and the mills shut. The agitation, which went on for nearly five months, came to an end, thanks to the intervention of Kamaraj and government assurances
